Very well analysed Marty.

Nothing in the list will beat the Rebel except the G1 and not by that wide a margin if only it does. Its lens are detailed and contrasted (see the Luminous Landscape's review), beautiful; but they are not the fastest, really. I'd take two lenses to cover from 28mm to 400mm (equivalent 35mm). As size is important, the advantage of the G1 over the Rebel is that the camera, but also the lenses are small.

It makes me smile when someone speaks about the FZ28 as a "big" camera: it is tiny, even compared to the SX10is from Canon. True that I am used to the KM 7D with a vertical grip and a Tokina AT-X Pro on it. I'd favor the FZ28 for travel, but if one is easily traumatized by noise in low light and can't cope with it using good technique and PP, better then forget I said anything.
