PS in light of the post above - I also have 40Ds, a 50D, ans a 1D III. Despite my praise for the 50D above, it is no match for the 1D III. Although an excellent camera, it is very clearly the backup body to the truly superb 1D III. Mostly, I use the 1D III and 500/4, but keep the 50D and 100-400 handy for close-up work. Sometimes I swap the lenses over either (a) to get extra reach out of the 500/4 - 50D & 500/4 bare lens beats the 1D III, 500/4 and 1.4 converter for detail; 50D, 500/4 & 1.4 converter beats the 1D III, 500/5 & 2.0x converter, and in either case focuses faster (but not so accurately) as the big unit, or less frequently (b) to get faster focus out of the 100-400 at the cost of poor reach. http://tannin.net.au for examples.
