4/3 has no focal length advantage-correct him if he is wrong

To photograph a bird from a certain point you will either need a much longer focal length lens on FF or you will have to crop the image to get the same framing, therefore losing the supposed advantage. With many such shots there is a limit to how close you can get.

You could get even more quality by using MF or even large format - but just try getting that huge hunk of equipment close enough. It has always been the same. Larger formats give better ultimate image quality, but this won't necessarily be clear in a final print, and in many situations it is far more difficult to capture the image with a larger format camera.
