Racing, up close

Inspired by the intense mind and body focus required for racing, I shot a series of photos framed tightly on the racer, hoping to depict the action of the moment in the rider's body and face.

Firebird Raceway has a turn where the racers pass very close to a low concrete wall. I was able to position myself on the other side of the wall, and therefore take pictures just a few feet from the bikes as they went past.

I set the D90 (with 70-300VR) in AF-C and began tracking the bikes a second or so before they passed me. I pressed the shutter just as the rider filled the frame. In spite of the fact that the riders were passing at a pretty good speed, the focus was really quite accurate.

The bright afternoon Arizona sun makes properly exposing without blowing out the bright reflective whites of the bikes and gear difficult, but these pictures fairly accurately depict the brightness of the scene.

Pics have had almost no PP, mainly just cropping. They could do with a bit of sharpening to my taste, but I tend to want more than is necessary.

C&C welcome as always.
