G10 Can we adjust in camera parameters like sharpness for JPG?

Hello,

I do not see where in a menu or screen that I can adjust the shooting parameters in my new G10 for sharpness, saturation and contrast. My Pentax Optio 750Z and Leica D-Lux2 certainly do.

If I recall my G7 did not have these in camera adjustments at all. I have read the entire manual, well skimmed through every page would be more accurate.

Am I missing something? Is there a screen/menu that allows these JPG parameters to be changed in my G10?

Turn on the camera and work through each menu. You will find the parameters that modify the image.

On the G9, it's buried in the My Colors mode.

Custom tab in the My Colors mode. You should see sharpening parameters there.

Oh yes, it did. And there were a number of threads on the forum that
talked about how to set Saturation/Sharpness/Contrast to get the most
pleasing effects.

Under the Custom Colors Menu the G7 allows adjustments to Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation, R, G, B & Skin Tone.

I wonder why you changed to the G10 when you clearly didn't understand how to use the G7?

Push the FUNC SET button on the back of the camera.

Navigate down the left column choices to My Colors (second option from top, directly under white balance).

Navigate across the color choices to Custom Color. There you will see the abbreviation DISP to the right of the words Custom Color.

The DISP abbreviation means that you should now push the DISP button on the back of the camera to change the Custom Color settings. That will give you options for changing settings for contrast, sharpness, saturation, red, green, blue, and skintone.

Navigate up/down to the item you want to change and navigate left-right to change the settings.

yes, that's for sure...

Custom colors is an old feature, implemented on many G and A series cameras including sharpness, contrast, saturation control, and some of them have control on RGB channel saturation separately, + skin tone control

Do these adjustments make any significant difference is my Question, those settings such as sharpness saturation and contrast, I have a G9 and a 960Is , i and as yet found not a lot changes if I allter Canons base settings on my two cameras I only ever shoot jepegs with the G9 .

If you open the PDF version of the manual (downloadable from Canon), you can use the search function to search for certain words. That makes it a lot easier to find things in the manual. I know from experience that it can otherwise be quite challenging.

I've owned the G10 for only a very short time and have not played much with these in-camera settings (and I'm not much of a jpg shooter, much preferring shooting raw...but won't be doing much with that until I can work with G10 raw files in Photoshop). However, I have been reading some threads lately that focus on improving results for jpg images by adjusting in-camera settings.

I have seen some posts suggesting that boosting the G10 in-camera sharpening and contrast a bit improves the quality of jpg images. I believe one of the posts I read suggested that if you want the best out-of-camera jpg quality from the G10, sharpening should be boosted all the way up and contrast up by one increment in the settings. I'm sure opinions will vary on this, and a lot will be determined by what you like to do (or don't like to do) in terms of image processing after the fact. For the kind of person who doesn't like to do extra work in Photoshop (or whatever program), changing in-camera settings a bit might actually help, rather than settling for default settings.

But, too...perceptions of how much these things affect image quality are fairly subjective (with varying opinions from person to person), and these perceptions can be affected by other factors, like quality of the monitor on which the images are viewed, monitor calibration, how printing is done (when images are printed), etc.

There are a lot of factors involved when it comes to determining how much or how little difference the in-camera adjustments make.

Downloading the manual is a great idea, I never thought of that! Now if anyone knows where I can find it I would appreciate it.

Canon Asia doesn't have it, in fact they seem to not list anything on the G10.

Canon USA has the G10 but I can find no down-loadable anything for it including the manual.

Does anyone know where it's at?

Well...I'm not sure where you're looking, but it's there under the Drivers and Downloads tab for the G10 (as long as you've navigated to the G10 product information on the Canon USA site).

Following your directions was so clear I was able to make the desired changes easily. Now after doing this I remember how it was done with the G7.

I knew the camera had this I just could not find it. It's been awhile since I traded my G7 for a DSLR.

All in all a very good response. I see the Raw file is very sharp and when I convert it to JPG using DPP I must use max sharpening to equal it. So from that I decided to adjust the sharpness of the in-camera JPG settings. I just could not remember how and I could not find it in the manual.

More good advice from CAMMASTER:

Setting the in-camera sharpness to max and also increasing the contrast by 1 is a sound move and that is what I have done.

Thanks for the links guys, that's where I was looking. Must be something wrong with my browser or firewall settings. There's nothing to scroll down to. All I get is a "Loading" and under that a bar for "Additional Downloads" and under that a message that says' "No additional downloads available". Even after going as far as to disable my firewall.

Guess I need to look at a few things closer on my system. As far as I know this hasn't been a problem before.

I think the confusing part about getting to those settings is that you have to push another external button (the DISP button) during the internal menu navigation.

It's pretty strange to have to navigate to an item via the menu system, then to have to push a completely different external button to get to the final menu settings.

Seems a bit odd to have it set up that way, doesn't it?
