Never had the 70-200mm F4L IS, hope to get it in a week or so. But i have owned the 70-300mm F4 and it is a good lens, but for motorsports i think its auto focus is too slow for many fast moving sports

I own the 70-300 IS and its focussing is indeed slow. However I took it to an air show (doesn't get much faster than that I think) and still got quite alot of good shots.

I think your choice should come down to the question if you need the extra 100mm or the realy fast focus?

For me the extra 100mm was the dealbreaker, because you can really make use of it when photographing something thats far away (planes, birds, wildlife) + you have quite some $$ advantage which you can punt into some other gear.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks to Greg, aka peacefrog!

Later on in the same thread also a photobase link of greg's:

Personally I liked this thread, didn't find alot of difference between the lenses and it made me want the 70-300 IS.

Keep in mind this is a 'static' picture comparison, I think if you want to shoot sports, then the 70-200 might have the edge, because of faster AF due to the ring USM. Hope this helps you.

I recently purchased a 70-200 f2.8 (non IS) lens for my 40D and had the opportunity to test it's performance at the Australian round of Moto GP at the lovely Phillip Island circuit. Image quality is brilliant with the bikes and riders coming up razor sharp against a beautifully blurred background. I also used a 1.4x extender when I was a bit further away from the track and this also worked really well.
Hope this has been helpful.

Hi, I just wanted to say that the link you provided compares the 70-200mm f4 and not the 70-200mm f4 IS. Apparently, from what I've heard, the 70-200mm f4 IS is newer and has improved optics and coatings, thus giving it better image quality than the non-IS version.
