Why did you guys buy G2 instead of the Eos D60?

Its not a stupid question really. There are many on this board
contemplating on getting a G3 even when they have a G2. If you
had just bought the Eos D60 in the first place it would be slightly
more
expensive than the combined cost of G2 and G3 plus accessories.
First, you can TRY to buy a D60. Over at the Canon SLR forum there are a ton of posts complaining of never-ending waiting lists.

Second, once you have an SLR of any kind you need lenses. That $2K price tag is for a body. Spend that and you have a nice camera that can't take pictures.

So what do you do then? Buy a cheap $150 lens for that $2K camera? No, it's likely you'll get at least three lenses, and even if you stay with the consumer (non "L") type it's going to cost you $300 to $800 each! If you decide on pro lenses then that $2K is going to look like chump change.

Even if you already have Canon EF lenses, that 1.6X multiplier is going to make you want at least one very WA lens. Quality WA lenses are expensive, not to mention heavy. A Gray-market Canon 14mm F2.8L is about $1800. Of course you can settle for a 20mm (that comes to 32mm, only a bit better than a G2) for about $400.

The D60 and G2 address different needs. Actually, even if I had a D60, I'd still probably want the G2 for convenience.

Truth is that when I bought my G2, the EOS D60 had not been announced yet, and the EOS D30 was running about three and a half times the price of the G2. I just debated the decision about a D60 this past week, and considering that I still like to shoot wide angle sometimes, I occasionally find myself needing to use high ISO speeds, and I hate having focus problems, I chose instead to invest in a Nikon 4000ED scanner, which gives me the best of both worlds, not to mention exposure latitude and dynamic range that blows away the current dslrs. (I already have an EOS 3 and my wife has an Elan 7E). Also, thirty-plus years of slides and negs that have gathered in boxes in the house and garage and a wife who would have needed a matching D60 had I bought one for myself, made the decision easy. When digital is truly the match of film in all respects, and the price of the equipment is competitive, I will probably buy a D something or another. Or if I get a nice catalog job that will pay for a D60 with a week or two of work...

I must be a photographer - I keep running around in circles of confusion.

Yeah, but My friend showed me his D60 prints, and at 6 MP,
an 8x10 looks absolutely spectacular. An 8x10 on a g2 still does
not match good 35mm quality.

If your house were burning down and you could take only one thing,
I'm sure most of you would take your wedding pictures, your kids
baby pictures, etc. And leave more expensive things behind, because
you value your memories. A better picture is a clearer
representation of your cherished memories- which are priceless.
And now go back to your toys...

D60 is severely overpriced. It's not even as capable as the EOS
Elan 7E film camera, which can be had for about $450.

If it was just a bit better (for example 7 focus zones instead of
3, somewhat faster AF) and retailed for about $1000, then I'd
probably get it. Until then the D60 just doesn't deliver the bang
for the buck.
Agreed. Besides, many of today's 35mm SLR cameras can come bundled with a stock 28-80mm lens and often for less than $700. A digital SLR camera? Screw that. When the Canon EOS-D30 was released, it broke the $3000 barrier AND it's way too expensive for a kit without any supplied lenses. Fast forward to the D60, still the same thing.

Try fitting one in your pocket. :-)

Do you use the same knife to clean fish, dice carrots and cut wallpaper? The G2 and D60 are intended for different purposes.

Being a serious photography new guy, I haven't felt like I have earned it yet. When I outgrow my G2, then I will consider a 'better' camera, but for now, learning to master my G2 is still proving to be a chore...

Its a little bit easier to master the eos d60. I was hooked when the salesperson demonstrated it.

Eos D60 is a better camera.
You are comparing apples and oranges. Both fruit and both taste good but different.

I bought my G2 to further develop my photography skills and for the simple enjoyment of it.
My next purchase is the Nikon D100....

I chose S330 coz of the Size =)

And oh coz im short of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.$$
Uh, other than the compactness of the G2, I think the most common
answer can be expressed in symbols: $$$

That was a hypothetical question. If your camera could make phone calls
, detect metal, wake you up in the morning, one would spend much more for it.
I don't get why you're asking this question when the answer is so
obvious. The first posts you've ever made on this forum was:

"I'm in the market for a good digital camera and I have $1,000
to spend. Is the G2 a good choice?"

which can be found here:

Doesn't your own query answer your own question?

I already have all kinds of lenses for it as I own 3 EOS cameras. However, there is the cost factor but the main one for a lot of people is that the main lenses one uses with any camera is the wide angle. Owning a D60 would mean buying another, very expensive lens to get the equivalent of a 35mm wide angle lens with a 28mm focal length. The case would be a lot more clear cut if the sensor in the D60 was the same size as 35mm film!
