I don't agree with you, but hey, that doesn't mean we can't be friends... :)

Happy shooting!

Best regards,

With a little patience, after scanning the first page of the 1D/1Ds/5D forum...

Out of 45 threads:
23 threads about the 5D series;
03 threads about the 1D;
03 threads about the 1Ds;
the rest not directly related to any camera.
[I only read the titles to get an idea of the content]

It's obviously a time when the 5D is fresh, but still.. it does look like a 1D/1Ds forum would see little action and may not be justified by itself. I wish I was around when people with eos-1 digital cameras used dpreview. :(

Best regards,
Alex

It is an interesting conundrum. We now have offered a DSLR capable of professional level stills and video from the same camera. And we have seen working wedding photographers talking about combining the two for their final products. It's not an issue of whether the 5DII is an official professional camera or not. Professionals are using it for work. And not about if videographers will use it or not. CMOS HD video cameras are being used for b-roll and action cameras in films. It's not about resolution, focus or IQ.

It's about a new way to capture moments in time and space. Combining two mediums together. It's talking about still photography and video in the same breath. It's about discussing video on a well known still photography website. And how does that fit in with the format that has been successful for a good amount of time.

I can only imagine that Phil Askey, his crew and Amazon Corporate are asking the same question. What do we do with this camera that does both? How do we address video on a website that has never done so?

Canon is leading the charge that Nikon started. How long before it's all too apparent to Canon that this 5DII was a good idea and start applying the concept to the xD, xxD and xxxD formats. And Sony must be watching this with a eagle eye. Sony and Canon have long been highly competitive in professional video. Sony probably has a camera to match in the wings ready to go as soon as it's apparent the 5DII will sell and be used by pros and amateurs alike.

How does DPR respond to the new multi-media camera? I would suggest this is the issue and DPR is deeply considering it. Perhaps posting suggestions how to address this issue will cover whether the 5D, 5DII should be separated out. And then does the Nikon offering and the Sony that will probably be available in the Spring (?) be included in the same forum or will each of those cameras have a multi-media forum? And how big (and possibly confusing) does it get.

Complicated issues for DPR.
