hibernate and write caching

When exploring my disk hardware driver, noticed that write caching was on. I turned it off to see if I could notice a difference. When I hibernated the computer it took about 10 times longer so turned it back on. Computer seems a bit faster when there is a lot of disk i/o going on as well.

This got me thinking. Does anyone know if write caching only refers to using the computer memory as a buffer when writing and/or the 8 megs of memory on the disk drive as well?
