As I recall, Nikon owns a patent in 2004 on a sensor design similar to the Foveon.

DPReview also posted Kodak's medium format sensor. In fact, Kodak was the first to make 36mm X 24mm sensor before Canon made theirs. If Sony is foolish enough to withhold selling sensor to Nikon, I am sure Nikon has other options than just going mediun frame. In manufacturing, an idle asset (plan / equipment) does not make money for the owner. Enough said.

It is always easy to drop names such as "from a Sony engineer". Engineer's do not make business decisions, top management does. Unless that nameless Sony Engineer is at the top of the food chain, I would not waste my time listening to that person.
