AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D against AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

I am using the D200 with the kit lense from my D70. I am keen to get a decent wideangle lens and need some advice between the AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8D against AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens.

Still learning on camera and want to take good pictures when travel. One of the main intention is to revisit Italy to Rome, and capture the indoor picture of the St Peter's church.

I have visited the church on previous 2 occasions and failed badly with the compact camera and film SLR. Probably due to no flash and little knowledge.

Any advice is appreciated.
