Question on Kelby's sharpening...

In Scott Kelby's Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers, he recommends a Sharpening action that starts by converting the image to Lab Color and using the Lightness channel. After selecting the settings, the image is changed back into RGB to end the Action.

In his 7-Point System book, his recommended sharpening action says nothing about Lab Color but closes the Action by choosing Fade Unsharp Mask from the Edit menu.

Is there an advantage to combining the two? Starting in Lab color and closing with Fade Unsharp Mask or is that redundant in some way?
