I finally decided that size does matter! I want a lightweight compact digital camera but can't decide between:

Nikon Coolpix 2500 (much cheaper) and
Sony DSC-P9

From reading the reviews it looks like either would be fine.
I'm most interested in indoor shots (of pottery)
close-ups
sending jpegs to friends

I'm not a photographer and just want an easy point and shoot. Maybe later I'll want more but not for now.

Any comments? Any other cameras I should consider?

I purchased a Sony P9 instead of the Nikon. I thought the Sony was superior because of the image quaility and other features. I am an owner of a Nikon SLR so I did have a preference for a Nikon. The coolpix does not record MPEG's with sound. You may not want to take video at first but it is a rather cool feature. I also think the Nikon does not have video out. I have had the P9 for about two weeks now and I am very happy with it. The Sony has a better zoom and it has a viewfinder. The Sony battery, though expensive, tells you in minutes how much charge is left. The Nikon is without a doubt cheaper but the Sony seems to me to be a better choice.

Thanks for the feedback. It's daunting trying to pick a camera when you don't know much about any of them.

Read some of the reviews on this website as well as others as a start. Try to think about what the most important features would be for you and go from there. As you discover what is important to you then you can adjust it to price.

From the specs, they're comparable although the Sony has an edge. Understandable, due to it being about twice the price with the new drop in price of the Nikon.

If I was in your position, I'd get the Nikon because it's so much cheaper, and not much inferior. The extra pixels doesn't matter that much. That way you have more money if you want to get a more serious camera later, and you have spent less if what you get is enough for you.

Also, the proprietary Sony memory stuff scares me. Compact flash is the memory just about all serious cameras use, so yoru investment in memory will be more future proof.

For the price of the Sony, you can get the Nikon with a big CF card, letting you take a lot of pictures in one go.
