Just how slow are the new SX1/SX10 lenses?

The wider starting point is a very welcome change, but as soon as
approaching the tele end the lens renders itself seriously hindered
in anything but direct sunshine. It really shouldn't be that way.

Guess what? The pixels on these sensors are 1.7 microns. That turns into diffraction-limited at around f4. Ughhh...
