40D and the MT-24EX Flash Metering Problem

Same dragonfly, same scene, but completely different exposures. I had the MT-24EX set to -2/3 FEC and I still had to reduce the first image another -2/3 in post:

This next shot is more than two stops over exposed and I didn't change any settings on the camera -11 frames and most of them show a different level of exposure:

The inconsistent exposures when using the 40D and the MT-24EX have driven me crazy this year -for every shot I've taken there are at least two that I missed...

Always minimal post processing and no cropping -unless you count the viewfinder...
