How many of you considered jumping ship

I consider switching almost daily! Even a modest review of the situation (what I like to shoot, the gear I already own, what other systems are good/bad at) quickly extiguishes the fire so I can get on with getting on. :-)

Cheers,
Oly

I want to deliver good images and not compensate for a small p*nis.
Martin, delivering good images is a commendable goal. But if you are suffering in other ways, it might be worth consulting a medical practitioner.

When some of us here have said in the past that size matters, we were talking about sensor area. I apologize if this has unintentionally struck a nerve with you.

I have no plans of jumping from Oly -- I have always owned an only through the good and the bad....

That said....I would not mind to complement my Oly gear with a Nikon D700 and portait zoom lense in the 28-70 range because there are times I do wish I could use high ISO at be able to focus in low light. Something I was hoping the 14-35 and E-3 would give me, but is not working out that way.

What is holding me back....cost! $3000 body only plus 2k lense and that is more expensive than all the equipment that I currently own.

Unless Oly can address some of the issues we often discuss on this forum, there is room for a complementry or supplementry system and I may pick up a used D700 and lense some time in the future.

We will see what m4/3s will bring us....or the new Fuji Sensor...cool times we live in with so many awesome choices.

They're on the second attempt now...

I must admit last week i considered selling everything & moving over
to Nikon with either the D90 or the D300.

I think the hype got to me for a moment moreso with the D90.

Anyroads i soon came to my sences & relized i have 2 great camera's &
good lenses & to sell them at a loss only to buy into a new system
again would leave me with empty pockets for a while, plus a new
camera with all new updated features won't make me any better a
photographer.

Anyroads im now looking forward to the E-xx & investing in some more
glass moreso the 9-18mm, Sigma 50mm F1.4 & 50-200mm SWD.

So how many of you have considered it in the past to switch to either
Nikon or Canon.
I dunno, as a hobbiest photographer, I really don't feel the need to switch systems, just adding on to what I've got. I've put quite a bit of money into my current set of lenses, and I understand their strengths and weaknesses. About two years ago, I did toy with going to the Pentax system, since that offered image stabalization and weather sealing (but it took a long time for those DA* lenses to show up, and by the time they came out, I had bought the E-510 to get stabalization, and now that I upgraded to the E-3, I have both in one package).

In terms of low light stuff, sure Olympus could be a little better at high ISO's. However, I've been revamping the statistics in my album, and out of 23,475 pictures in my album, only 248 were shot at ISO 1600 or 3200 (545 were shot at f/2.5 or faster), so I'm not really pushing the envelope in the low light arena. In terms of wide angle, only 247 shots were done wider than 14mm, and of my 4 main lenses, the 11-22mm only gets used about 5% of the time, so evidently I'm not that drawn to the wide side of things.

I'm already reaching my limit of what I want to carry, so going with two systems would just add to the problem.

Actually I began asking people I know if they are interested. With allot of the type of shooting I do, I find myself pushing up the iso. The noise is terrible, imho. Also, I've been a bit disatisfied with my oly stuff. I like the colors of another mfg. better and have been offered a used one. Oly lens selection is also lacking, imo, not quality, but selection/price.

I love the shallow DOF of full frame, and so I bought a Canon 5D. I use it with the 50mm F/1.4 and the 85mm F/1.8, and soon to add the 135mm F/2. Now some have said "it isn't that sharp with those lenses", but in print beside my E-3 with the 12-60mm for both at 8x10 ... and they're both impressive.

As for better colours with less work from the E-3, I do agree ... however b/w are much better from the 5D with less processing.

Well said, Louis!

No one has to be "jumping ships" - it's all a matter of money: if you can afford it, buy another system, or two, or three! So many folks believe that getting a different camera will make them better photographers.

I am still honing my skills with the E-500 and will patiently wait for the Tweener to step up for better AF and LV. I think I am ready.

I can afford to buy Canon or Nikon or Sony, but why? I am perfectly happy with Oly, in spite of its actual or perceived shortcomings.

Here is a recent image I took with my ol' and trusty E-500:

I don't understand all the switching business. I'm still dreaming of owning the E-3, I held one again recently at Cameras West and I just loved the feel of it. I like the x2 angle of view for nature and from what I'm told Olympus has top notch glass.

Has anyone else seen the pictures taken with the new 12mp Panny sensor? It sure looks like the new sensor is better at 1600 ISO then my 510 is at 800 ISO and even the 3200 doesn't look bad either. Now more resolution better ISO's great glass, I just don't understand the need to switch. I'm excited about the new tweener and maybe by then I will be able to pick one up or maybe even an E-3 on the cheap. Well until the new cameras are here I will continue to enjoy learning my trusty old outdated E-510.

No, I did not consider jumping ship. I might jump inside the Oly ship though, when an upgrade to the E-3 is there.

I despised 4/3.

I waited nearly 2 Years for Nikon to release a fast, small Af-prime for my D40, nothing. Instead ever bigger and more expensive cams and lenses. The new 50mm/1,4 is too long to be useful as a walkaround.

I re-tried Pentax with the K200 and a Pancake, but too heavy, and the lens too long again. Now the K-m looks interesting, but hey, 200 gramms heavier (it's a lot) than the e-420, and the 40/2,8 remains to be a 60 which made me sell everything, not to talk about the slow menues.
So I bought the E-420 with the pancake 1 months ago.
Wow.
Love it. Small, light, fun.

Were it not for my own prejudice, I'd bought the E-400/410 way earlier, love the design and the idea.
With the release of the Pancake, I gave it a try.
Now I'm bought, I'm a convert. Gave my Nikon stuff away.
Maybe APS is doomed once FF gets cheaper!?

All is getting big, and if you guys want to carry all the fat lenses and DSRLs, go for it. I don't. (m)4/3 seems to be the right thing for me.

And you don't get anything like the Pancake, like an 14-54 from any other manufacteur. I'm sure more small stuff is to come.

I constantly think of jumping ship.

Often times, I walk up at the side of the boat with my pockets full of lenses and flashes, and the cameras around my neck. But I'm not sure I could make the big jump towards the bridge, without falling into the water in between. All that heavy gear is hampering my monkey jump. Falling into the water, I will loose alot. Ditch my cloth, with the heavy lenses in my pockets. Some cameras might survive the wet swim though.

Conclusion, I wouldn't make a jump into the crowded mainstream Canikon island. I'm a bit more selective, so rather a Hasseblad, Leica, Panasonic, Sony, or Pentax island would be more attractive to me.

I'm currently thinking of flinging my current FT lenses and flashes onto an island, one by one, so that I with a lighter gear in my pocket, can more easily jump the ship into the next island of µFT.

My first DSLR was E1 after switching from the film. E1 did a good job except at night so I was forced to use external strobes to help the camera to focus. It caused couple heated arguments with fellow photographers from the competition but I survived :) their wrath. I was waiting for E1 successor but instead i got its little brother E510. I don't need to use external lighting anymore and I get 85% of night shooting. My plan was to add E3 this year but I got friend's S2 to play with that changed my mind. I have realised that using 2 systems is a big advantage for me. Now my S2 died and I am in market for a new D300. I intent to use both horses for different courses :). And I am getting again another S2 (or S3) for their exceptional colors.

E1, E510, 14-54, 50-200, 50/F2, Ec14 + many OM lenses
Fuji S2,

Because compact is what OLympus does better than anyone else, let C &N & S make their bloated, heavey, noisy DSLRs - I want a high quality compact system and I don't think anyone else but Olympus can deliver it better.

Shoot the Light fantastic

On the other hand, I don't know of any system which can match the
overall quality, and range of the current E-System lineup.

Catch-22...
Yes it's not simple. Now I've spend some time looking at Nikon lens reviews. Nikons lens list is incredible in numbers and redundant ranges. There are many lenses in every range. But reviews are certainly not convincing for every one of them. Them gems are pricey.

Then I find myself better of with my 7-14 and 50mm, maybe even 11-22. These lenses are SO BL* DY impossible to beat. Only Nikon option that looks almost* as good as Olympus 7-14 is 12-24. All in all it's not even on par with Olympus. On IQ maybe but not on build, size, sealing.

So I repeat myself: Why the heck can't we have a 4/3 body that complements these unique lenses? It's annoying.

I really like small cameras and I work long hours during the day so I only really get out to take pictures at night so I like fast lenses. Nobody currently has an affordable digital system with small fast primes and a small body to match it. So the only alternative has been my film cameras and I use my OMs and Bessa a lot. I'd love it if someone squeezed the largest possible sensor, into the smallest possible body, with the fastest possible lenses and sold the lot for under 3K but that is about as likely as a flying hippo with pink lipstick.

And what if you want wireless flash? same again, you have to replace
the flashes AND the camera.
Excellent point. I do have an FL-50 --- that I had to buy to replace my FL-40 because I bought my E-300 (with no FL-40 TTL support) first.
