Panic Attack - Focus Mode D700

Went into a panic attack. Fooling around with my D700 in my motel room the camera stopped focusing while firing off some shots. Checked the M/A - M switch on the lens, in M/A, but I cycled it, still wouldn't focus. Removed the lens (24-70/2.8), then reattached it, nothing. At that point I was getting ready to throw up realizing either my brand new camera and/or lens was defective, and have to be sent back to Nikon for repairs. I then checked the Focus Mode switch on the camera, which was in M. Than God.

I hated the mode switch on the Canon 5D because of chances that you can bump the dial to manual. Now I got this blasted Focus Mode switch to worry about on the D700.

One dumb question, why M mode on this switch? Doesn't the M mode on the lens accomplish the same?
