50D - first impressions (quite interesting, I think)

After picking up my 50d this morning I've had the chance to fill up a 4gb CF-card (Sandisk Extreme IV) with test samples. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidarnm/sets/72157607436380817/

All pictures are shot with the EF 70-200 f4 L IS, a lens that I frequently used with my old 40d. The 40D is also the reference camera for today's initial 50D test. All the captures are converted from raw. During shooting I used the Neutral Picture Style, no in camera sharpening or NR. Lightroom default capture sharpening + some minor exposure adjustments to some of the images. 100% jpg-develops exported to Flickr (no sharpening on export).

On the bright side: If you are upgrading from the 40D you're likely to be pleased with the added MP and the great LCD (yes, you can do a proper focus check!).

On the not so bright side: Judged by the out of camera raw images, I can't see any improvement with regards to noise at pixel level (at some point I even felt the 50d was slightly more noisy han the 40d). The ISO3200 images are not usable, banding is disappointingly an issue here too. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidarnm/2880491600/in/set-72157607436380817/

Regarding AF there seem to be no improvement. While most captures are perfectly sharp, the camera occasionally returns OOF images for no good reason. http://www.flickr.com/photos/vidarnm/2879335661/in/set-72157607436380817/ ; That being said, I did a 15 frames burst (AI Servo) on a boat approaching me at steady speed, and 13 of the frames were tack sharp.

Let me also add that colors and IQ are generally very pleasing, although I'd expected a more "(r)evolutionary" upgrade.

BTW. Average raw file size about 20 mb
