How Picasa works

Picasa has a different way of working with photos - which is a landmark feature - some people like it, some people don't.

1. Don't let it import anything.

2. Don't let it sense / wait for your card reader or USB stick.

3. When the program launches, go into Tools > Folder Manager and select which folders for it to work with and which ones not to.

4. Picasa will then build a cache on C: drive of thumbnails, quite fast. No way to change the location.

5. Once the thumbnails are complete, you have a gallery of folders that you browse within Picasa - no changes are made to the actual files, Picasa keeps a record of your adjustments for each photo.

6. When you have done enough, You can flag several files and do File > Export Picture to Folder - and it will generate new files based on the originals and your edits. The originals stay as originals.

7. Picasa can seamlessly export to your Picasaweb account and to some extent, to Flickr directly.

8. You can create albums - Albums can refer to any file in any watched folder - so one photo can be represented in more than one Album.

If you want to directly edit a photo but have that gallery concept, try Microsoft Live Windows Gallery or several others.
