D3: Buy or Wait

I just got my D3 9 days ago and I regret waiting so long to buy one !

I thought my D2X was OK and I love my D2hs, but the D3 is the BOMB ! The 3D autofocus system allows me to track the fastest of my dogs that I could never have kept the focus sensor on with my D2hs, and the speed that this camera writes to Ducati CF cards is incredible.

If there is anybody else out there who is wondering whether they should buy now or wait - I say DON'T wait !

The D3 is SO MUCH CAMERA !

And the high ISO capability of the camera will allow me to take photos in many situations that I could never take photos before.

LoL...Lots of words of encouragement!

I feel like kicking myself!! for not getting it earlier!!
If i bought it a month ago!! i would have saved myself 250AUD!!
And could have played with it a month ago!!!

K no more making these mistakes!! I'm getting it!

I BIT THE BULLET AND BOUGHT IT!!

Thanks to everyone that contributed to this topic....u gave me the support to get it and not regret it!!

Even if nikon announce a d3x... i know ill be happy with this for a couple of years....

AND OMG!! ITS AWESOME!!!

Its just a hobby for me...but hell...if u wana get into something...u better go all the way!! lol

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE ADVICE!

It's so hard! I don't know if I want to wait / save up for the D3X... is it really worth it?

personal experience??
lol

ask urself if u really need 24mp?? sensor cleaning??
no idea what else is in d3x...

i thought about d700...my old body was always with the batt grip...so not really into the smaller size..coz when i put on a 70-200 or 24-70...it feels unbalance without the grip...

then i thought i want something that will last...and solid...fast when i need it to be?? and top of the range so i wont have buyers remorse thinking i could have gotten something better....

then the whats coming in the future....consider the cost....i can get a d3 for 4.5-4.8k....now! d700 cost 3.5k ...1 k difference for the stuff i need...if u minus the d700 batt grip and batt...thats like 600-700 difference....i rather just get a d3....

and if they announce a new camera...i got to wait 1-2 months for it to be in the store and...2-6 months till i get it if its out of stock ?? and the price will be at a premium....since everybody wants it.....too many unhappy variables....lol....So i got the d3...and not think so much....if all the pros can use it now and produce great images...i guess i dont need to wait for something better....

so yea...hope it helps

24 MP would be amazing. But I'm not entirely sure I can be that patient, nor do I know if I necessarily need it. I do want to be able to make larger prints (up to 20X30). I doubt they'll announce the D3X until next year though, so it might be a long wait. Otherwise, the D700 is perfect.

sounds like ur pretty clear with what you want....

i did consider d700..only as a backup in the longterm...

get the d700...use it...when d3x come out...ull know after using d700...if u need the larger mp...if u do..then cool u got a main and backup ff camera....
if not...u still have the d700....win win...:)

I don't think I'll be buying the D3X in the near future... too much money, plus I don't need 2 cameras. That's why it's hard to decide.

A few more days of waiting is but a drop in the bucket compared to how long you've waited already, right? If you don't need it, wait. Then, if Nikon announces something like that rumored D3x (or whatever it will be called), you have another choice and probably another thread asking what to do. ;)

Get it now. Don't wait. I didn't - bought mine last saturday and can honestly say it is the best camera I have ever handled. You could spend a life-time waiting for the latest and greatest - and they won't necessarily be that much better than the outgoing model. If you really want the new one, get the D3 and upgrade.

For what it's worth I'm on the waiting list for the D4 at my dealer.

a victim of "analysis paralysis." If you wait for the "next new" model you'll never get one. I've owned a D3 since January and have over 8 months experience with full format now.

Hey there Bill

I just wanted to say that it was mainly your posts that pushed me over the edge to get the D3 - your enthusiasm was most appreaciated - thank you!

Cheers
AJ

I know not many people will be replying to this post...but I'll just
give it a shot.

Ive been wanting to get a d3 since earlier this year...been saving up
for it.
Saved up 5 grande...so its time to buy....I have a d200...but always
wanted a pro body ff camera.

D700 was announced....but still prefer the big body...don't like
grip..since its stays on my d200 all the time...

QUESTION IS....i can get a d3 for around 4.6k(grey from jpn) in
melbourne but a trusted seller.
If you lieve in the US, I wouldn't do that!!

First, if the camera breaks, you are SOL, Nikon USA WILL NOT EVEN TOUCH IT!! You will have to ship it to wherever you got it from!!

Second, you can get a D3 from B&H for $4500 or you can get it from J&R throug the MSN Cash Back for around $3800!
Should I wait till photokina's announcement? to know what is coming out?
I know 12.1mp will be sufficient for my needs for a long long
time.....but still with the announcement at least ill know what is
out and with "new" announcement....d3 price is going to fall somemore
(would be a Plus)....
Why, do you need more than 12.1 MP??

What are you shooting for?? Bilboards??

I had a shot published Double Truck with the D2X!! So..... I don't think you are in a desperate need for more MP, unless you think you need them!!
Even now with d700...d3's price been coming down pretty quick..so
wait it out?
The J&R Price is great! Do you need the camera now?? Or wait forever??

There is always going to be a new camera coming out!!
I'll still be shooting with my d200...so there won't be any big loss
in pictures....just my URGE of getting a FF PRO BODY LOW LIGHT
WONDER!!
Then.... Get it!!
DISCUSS? thanks!

I agree completely with this point of vue.

1. Yes, the big improvment will be in dynamic range more than in number of pixel (the huge number of vegetables you have in your plate doesn't mean the cooking is best ?). Except for pure studio Pro work, above 12 or 14 Mpix IMHO, you will not really "see" the difference on a A3 printed picture ? More important is : "how are pixels produced and handled ?".

2. If you wait today, probably you will wait all your life long.. when you buy the last camera coming on market, a newer is already to be produced in labs when not in quality test cycle. So you could be frustate a long time. Forget the few $ you spent additionaly and take pictures..! The time you wait is lost forever.

The D3 is absolutely one of the best camera (if not the best), in FF format, you can use today. This camera puts a milestone in Photography history.

Cheers,
Michel.
