The Nikon 18-200 VR has AF-S SWM for around $650!! Why the Canon
version shouldn't have USM when it costs ~$100 more is mind-boggling.

In my local pro shop the difference between 50D body and 50D kit is 500€. (1199€ for body, 1699€ for kit).

Knowing the normal "exhange rates" I'm assuming this will translate to ~$500 in US. Expecting to go close $400 / 400€ level in not too long time.

Will be interesting to see if there will be 450D+18-200 kit in near future. If the lens is decent enough, I may consider updating my 350D+17-85 kit to that.

I'm surprised that the EF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS lens does NOT feature
an ultrasonic motor.

This lens is apparently intended to become part of a kit with the
50D. The construction seems at least partly dictated by the need for
enough cost reduction to allow for a good bundled price. I think the
only reason the mount is metal is because the lens length and weight
generates enough torque on the mount to require it.

The kit association is probably why the lens was co-announced with
the 50D. This means that there may be other lenses forthcoming,
announced on their own or together with any 5D Mk II announcement (if
one occurs).
