The technical problem

There's a big technical problem with movie mode on Canon DSLRs: the EOS system was not designed for contrast-detect autofocus. As you may be aware, the XSi/450D takes a number of seconds to autofocus in contrast-detect mode.

Any movie mode would basically be fixed-focus, which would put it at a big disadvantage over even the least expensive digicam.
