This is a misunderstanding. We are not talking about digital zoom (which is useless), we are talking about extended zoom. Let me give an example: When I shoot the moon with full zoom, there will be still a lot of the sky being visible. On the FZ28, you can reduce image size and zoom further without loosing image details (in contrast to the digital zoom). What you do essentially is to cut the picture. You can also do this later when post-processing, but this method saves space on your SDHC card.
