If you want to really cheap out on your first lens for the D700 (and I'm going to be laughed at for writing this)... how about a used, long out of production 28-80mm f/4-5.6?

It is to the FX/35mm frame what the 18-55mm is to DX. Cheap, plasticy and with surprisingly sharp optics. The "G" version of the lens has an odd, f/3.3-5.6 aperture and is even smaller and lighter than the non-G with similarly good optics. Less than $100. If you need a lens now and the D700 chewed up your budget, it's hard to go wrong with that.

A fast prime may be a good idea like the 50mm f/1.8 for less than $150 or the 50mm f/1.4 for about $300.
