Re:more on the 35-70 2.8 D, a workhorse if there ever was one.

Have had the D700 for two weeks and my old 35-70 2.8 D lens is the best so far, and gives consistently crisper and sharper images than my 24-120 VR. But watch out for flare in back lighted situations. My old 80-200 D is also an excellent choice for the D700. I round it out with the 17-35 2.8 AFS. FYI I tested the 17-35 against an old Nikon 24mm non CPU from the 80's and they were equal in quality at 24mm.

Years ago I took 3 shots of a 'glass' curtain at f8 and 7 feet, using a Nikon 55mm macro 2.8, a Nikon 50mm f1.4, and the Nikon 35-70 2.8 D. I used 25 speed b/w film. The macro was the sharpest, the 35-70 almost as good, and the 50mm 1.4 the worst by far. Maybe my 1.4 was a dud, because I seldom used it.
