I say the Tamron 28-300VC

I tried one a few weeks ago and was flat blown away. The color accuracy, contrast and even the sharpness wide open at 300mm was beyond what I could have imagined. I sold off my 18-200vr when I switched a few weeks ago over to a D700. I miss that versatility and frankly in many cases the image quality was very good indeed. The same applies to the Tamron. IN fact I felt pretty strongly that the VC is faster to activate and at the very least as if not more effective than the VRII. I don't see you going wrong. I plan on getting one asap. I have fine glass otherwise but frankly I'm not concerned about IQ loss as I was very impressed with what I saw. In the "real world" of printing you won't see worlds of difference for sure. It is $600 very well spent.
