You're obviously not adverse to non-Nikon lenses. I do encourage you to try the Tamron or even the older 24-135mm which goes for a steal these days in the 2nd hand market. Not looking at AF speed or default apertures, in terms of colours and sharpness, the Tamron hold their own wide open and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've owned both Nikon and Canon versions of the 24-135mm and 28-300mm VC and been impressed and pleased by their performance. And I have used L lenses in the past, and have the 70-200mm VR in my kit now as well as 20mm, 50mm and 85mm primes, the Tokina 10-17mm and Sigma 12-24mm.

BTW, how's your Sigma 12-24mm? Mine I find intolerably soft wide open, and only mildly sharp at f8. I only continue to use it because it will be mainly used on the D300/D700 on tripod w/ slow shutter and non-moving subjects, is a FX lens and has very little distortion.

Personally I will be upgrading to D700 soon (have D300). I already
have a 24 2.8, 50 1.4 AIS, 50 1.8 AFS, 85 1.8 AFS 70-200 2.8 VR,
tokina 11-16 2.8 which will work fine at 16 on FX and sigma 14-24.
the only lens I will be adding is a 35 f2 which I used to have but
was stolen. Don't see much point in owning a D700 if you intend to
use it with low quality or slow zoom lenses.
