Re: Late August is the usual Canon announcement time

Skip, You are right high ISO capability is always useful. My comment is just it is probably less of a requirement for the general type of work 1Ds3 are used for than the type where people shooting vacation pictures or birthday parties with xti or 5D.

To brian44, I did say there are exceptions. PJ and sports (I mention that specifically) are definitely among them. However I would think they usually use 1D instead of 1Ds. My whole point is reason why you don't hear many people mention noise performance of 1Ds3 is many of them are using the camera in studio or for landscape and not use it at high ISO. One more thing is as bronxbombers mentioned, don't be confused with per pixel noise to per frame noise. Per pixel noise is irrelevant to the final result. Per frame noise is what counts whether you do web posting or print A2.

Strange as it might sound but low light capability is mostly demanded
by amateur photographer for snap shot type photography. Pros and
serious photographers will either use elaborated lighting set up or
use tripod for landscapes whenever they can. I don’t think many of
them and their clients will appreciate ISO800+ images from any
cameras. Perhaps that’s the reason you don’t hear many of them
mention low light capability of 1Ds3. There are exceptions of
course. Indoor sports photography is one of them but that’s not
where 1Ds3 is used.

Carl, this isn't quite true. We often have to shoot weddings in very
low light circumstances and in some churches, flash is not allowed.
Low light performance can be critical at such times. Also, getting a
high ISO when shooting in a club or reception, even with flash, helps
minimize problems caused by slow shutter speeds or shallow DOF.
