Well the F707 weighs 667 grams, which leaves your 800 g limit as something of a puzzlement. I'd look hard at the specs of the next one!

I suggest you the Olympus C-40ZOOM (4 MPixels, auto and manual modes).
For me it is the best in size vs quality/features.
It was my previous "target" before the F707.

I believe Robert also mentioned the F707 is too big for his needs,
and the F707 is BIG..... so I can understand his point of lugging it
around all day and finding it tiresome. Some people prefer smaller
cameras they can easily slip into their shirt or trouser pocket.
I believe SIZE is the issue - not wieght.

The solution is obvious: get trousers with bigger pockets.

yep - size is main problem - could live with weight but the f707 is huge . not for day by day use .more for a studio or special taking photoes trips.

seems little akward when one walks with this kind of camera and mainly shoots in the 'auto' mode :)

i guess i bought it more because of this forum and less because i realy need it - anyone else like me ?
Heheheheh... more pizza, more butter, more sausage, more lard...

good idea, I add 60 pounds or so I can get bigger
trouser pockets........ theheh =)

Afraid I can't walk down that path with you.

Where I go, my F707 goes, and usually in Manual mode, too. :-)

At first, I was almost embarrassed to bring my camera along with me. I thought I'd draw a lot of attention to myself. As I began to miss more and more shots due to my own self-consciousness, I began to get more bold (but tried to be inconspicuous, too). It's more important to get the shot than worry about folks staring at me. That was my issue.

For others like yourself, it really is the size factor. But as I'd rather have a little bit of gear with me (emphasis on "a little"), the F707 works for the way I want to shoot. The only time I need a smaller camera is really for times when I want my wife to capture a shot, but she can't because she doesn't know how to use the camera. I need something simple enough not to scare her away, and small enough that she won't complain about it hurting her back as she takes it out of her pocketbook.

Canon G2, I say...great color tone, firmware upgrade, sharpness is closest to F707. But becareful! You have to hold it first and see how heavy it is...

If it's still heavy!?...Nikon coolpix 5000 is a a pretty good camera and very light or you can get a supper light aluminium body Nikon Coolpix 885!

If it's still heavy!!! Whew!...I think you should get a tiny webcam. And if it's still heavy!....I think you shouldn't carry anything or....wear anything, because it's surely lighter than your cloth! :) Heeheehee

I hear you Robert, the G2/S85 form factor is about as big as I'm
willing to tolerate size-wise in a digicam....something I can slip
on the inside of my windbreaker but still have a strong
enough built-in flash for indoor photography. Improved AF
and low light capabilities would also be nice to see in the next
wave of digicams and maybe a G2/S85-type camera equipped
with the gee-whiz Foveon sensor would be neat as well. 8)))
Anyways, my S70 is still going strong and I ain't in no
particular hurry for any upgrades just yet..... I gotta see if
the Foveon sensor goes beyond its 'vaporware ' stage right
now before making any buying related decisions.

Good luck to you.

Here ya go! A month with this and she'll be happy with anything . Only 2640 grams here, but if that's not convincing enough she could always add the motor drive for a total of 3020.

Mike — or is it really Ulysses at last? Wilson, maybe...?

frank - at begining i thought i could live with the f707 but as time went by i noticed that i no longer take the camera with me (it hase this huge bag) and the 1K $$$ digicam with the 5 mp and all the other buzz stayed with no use. sold it and bought minolta s404. oh what a diffrence . the mp is not the same but at least i have it with me and i can realy use it .

i took the s404 after the great review by phil and the atractive price ( 470$) - i say it's better 4mp in hand then 5mp at home ...

it realy looks strange to walk with f707 kind of camera in the middle of the day. people think you are one of those 'artistic no working-burdon on society' king of guy who walks all day with huge cameras and taking photoes of iralevant things . looks stupid.

Robert,

Why in hell would you care what others may think of you simply by the camera you are toting? And I certainly don't think that I or anyone else look stupid carrying the 707 as you imply.

With regards to the Minolta 404 , I have used it for a full week and found it to be a very good camera.Much different than the 707 but nevertheless a good camera. I liked it.
Enjoy your Minolta 404.
John
