Went Digital and Film

Joe Lavee is here. All players are present, or lurking in the virtual clouds.... the curtain rises.......

'Good composition is only the strongest way of seeing the subject. It cannot be taught because, like all creative effort, it is a matter of personal growth. In common with other artists the photographer wants his finished print to convey to others his own response to his subject. In the fulfillment of this aim, his greatest asset is the directness of the process he employs. But this advantage can only be retained if he simplifies his equipment and technique to the minimum necessary, and keeps his approach free from all formula, art-dogma, rules, and taboos. Only then can he be free to put his photographic sight to use in discovering and revealing the nature of the world he lives in.'
Edward Weston, Camera Craft Magazine, 1930.

Glad I kept the popcorn and butter nice and hot. Was there ever any doubt? His new hobby (or profession) it appears is to search out my posts and starting with the attacks. Now if only one other showed up, the curtain could rise and the stooges can begin their performance. Let's all sit back and watch.

Oh....we're licensed so pass the beer as well.....

Ah well.....keeps us all laughing....

If Phil were to post either of the shots in a camera review he'd have a few thousand people laughing at him for his lack of composition.

However, I realize this is a 'film -vs- digital' post, and the rules as such are that we have to give a substantial handicap to film shooters because of their lack of self esteem.

Jezus K1000Photographer...., if you really want to improve as a photographer, then you really need to stop getting critiques from this crowd....and I do mean that sincerely. You also don't want to see what I've been doing with B&W lately and an ancient 6mp dSLR.

Also, if you think this is a 'flame', then post that shot (either of them) in the critique forum and get ready to take some real heat. However, I get the impression you really don't care and don't want to improve.

Anyways....

What do you think of the photos?
You know I really like them a lot.
I have tried to recreate that same look from digital. It gets a bit
close but there ends up a big loss in low contrast detail in the
extremely light areas in the digital shots. Film gets punchier but
still maintains the shading detail.
I just might have to give this film stuff another go, I really see where your coming from now. My new motto shall be "out with the new, in with the old"

....All three of them have entered the building and have done their typical seagull dropping post.

How could I have guessed? Gee....I don't know ;-)

Maybe I misread the thread title but I think he said 'digital and film', not 'digital vs film' - a Freudian slip on your part maybe? Never mind, have some popcorn, it does wonders for your self esteem.

I think it may be that he's on autopilot when it comes to attacking anyone who dares use film over his 10D.

Nothing wrong with a 10D, why does he call it ancient? I was right, he does need some popcorn.

Relax Lutti, no one objects to you using your 4x5 and disposable film cameras.
Watch the seagulls

Nice shots there. I shoot mostly digital now but still use my FE2
once in a while. I run the negs through my aeging but still
functional Coolscan 4 that I used to digitise my slides

Got my popcorn ready.

Pass the salt.
Popcorn cold yet?
Nope....you keep posting ;-)
Common Lutti, move on. How about being nice.
... and talking of nice, the OP's shots are beautiful. How about
posting some of your 4x5 famous landscape shots?

I didn't realize you were such a fan. After I'm done a wedding tomorrow, I'll post some shots of recent sales of 4x5 captures.

Or perhaps you just have a lot to learn, you being a newbie.

Even the most innocent digital and film will soon become digital V film, some of it surprise surprise from the filmaholics.
Never mind, have some popcorn, it does wonders for your self esteem.
Actually you will just end up overweight. I would suggest perhaps some raw vegetables to nibble on.

No no Dave, we have now been converted,we have seen the light, as of this moment on we shall rid ourselves of this dreadful new technology and shall from this moment on shoot only in the old fashioned way.

We shall obtain really old cameras, load them with rolls of cellulose and when we have finished a roll ? we shall immerse them in baths of chemicals, for an indeterminate length of time, then we shall hang the resulting prints from a line attached with clothes pegs and await them drying. Then the really exciting bit, we will drool over them and comment ( often to ourselves ) about the amazing "Look" that our wonderful old film prints have, as opposed to that awful new fangled digital rubbish.

"Out with the new in with the old."
