SD1000 works great

Despite what the noise nancies will tell you, a good shot is rarely ruined by noise.

If you've ever shot high speed film you'll probably be okay with it up to ISO800 and sometimes ISO1600. You do lose a lot of color information at the higher ISO settings, but they still make great black and whites if you play with your tone curves a little. I'd also recommend turning the in-camera sharpness, contrast, and saturation settings to the lowest in the My Colors menu.

The G9 is a great camera also, and RAW ability would be a nice addition just to get away from the in-camera settings, but I find the SD1000 to be adequate for what it is.
