As far as your friend is concerned, if you had access to the raw data you may find that the image is overwhelmed by noise on a pixel-by-pixel basis. However, you can use the random nature of the noise to average it out and if there's no noise pattern you can always get a (low-resolution) signal that is above the noise level.

Well, there's one exception: when there really is no signal to be detected, such as in this lens cap image
