Ac Adapter

Mostly, they filter out RFI. Don't have much effect on audio frequencies. And yes, they do really help. With all of the wireless devices today, wireless phones, cell phones, pagers, bluetooth, 802.11 stuff, wireless doorbells, family walkie talkies, and on and on. . ., these things are more necessary now than ever. So you will see them even more frequently on power supplies and to some extent on audio cables. Just remember that if a strong RF signal gets into the power supply of digicam, it gets to the circuits, IC chips, etc. and can cause significant problems. I just wish they could make them smaller!??

George,

It's a Magnetic Ferrite clamp that allegedly keeps unwanted "noise"
out of the signal. It is also used to reduce RFI from your audio
signals. You see these on power cords these days, and in my
opinion, they don't do squat. If anything, they are a nuisance, and
get in the way.

From a past life working in RFI chambers, I can tell you that the
ferrite is probably there to help the power supply pass radio interference
emmisions regulations. Without it, your unfortunate neighboor with
marginal TV reception (not everyone has cable/satelite) might get wavy
lines on his/her screen and complain to the FCC.
