With HDR sequences one should be extra careful with camera movement.

I think it is best to set the camera to auto bracket -2 0 +2, put it on a tripod or something equally sturdy, and use a remote shutter release cable. Also i like to use mirror lock up, so I actually press the shutter button 6 times, 3 times to lock the mirror up, and 3 times for each photo.

Of course, if the speed of the sequence is important, leave the mirror lock up step, as it will add at least 3 seconds to the sequence.

In short, yes, the XSi does give you HDR helping functions, what especially the Nikon entry level DSLRs do not (D40, D40X, D60 have no bracketing and no mirror lock up, the D80 has no mirror lock up but has bracketing).
