AF lenses will meter and can manual focus. AI lenses will not meter but can manual focus. AFS lenses will meter and auto focus.

Here is a chart containing more details.

Also, Sigma makes HSM lenses that will meter and auto focus on the D40x.

Look for "AF-S" Nikon lenses
Yes, "AF-S" are fully compatible, "AF" will meter but not AF, "AI" will not meter.
and "HSM" Sigma lenses.
There are also several non-HSM Sigma lenses that will AF on the D40/x/60.
These cameras require a lens with a focus motor, but not specifically an
"HSM" motor. A micro motor will do.

Here is a list of D40/D40x/D60 fullt compatible lenses:

That list is the best going in one place but it is not comprehensive.
It does not list the Nikon 80--200 AF-S f/2.8 for example.
The list is of current lenses. The AF-S version of the 80-200 is not current.

Other compatible discontinued lenses, such as the AF-I types, are also not in the list.

Point taken! But it does not actually say current lenses/lenses about to be launched and does include eg. the old Mk I 18-55 as well as the Mk II and the VR version!
