I should be getting my 200-400 within a few days, once customs has
cleared it. I read all of your arguments and counter arguments with
interest. Many true things were said. We all have a lot of respect
for Thom. Most of us also respect the opinion of Bjorn Rorslett. They
differ in their evaluation of these lenses. Michael Weber hardly uses
his fixed focal length lenses since he got the 200-400.

I think you guys talk too much, and shoot to little. There seems to
be a trend to 'popularize' a lens, and then everybody jumps on the
band wagon. Sooner or later somebody 'debunks' the same lens, and
everybody says the same lens is junk! (200-400 and 70-200 are prime
examples).

Lenses will always be updated, improved (hopefully) etc. Just stop
talking so much and get out and use your lens. The results should
speak for themself.

You will love your new lens. Let's face it - all these expensive pro-level lenses are in the zone that will produce a great picture when combined with good technique. I debated whether to get the 300 f/2.8, the 400 f/2.8 or the 200-400 f/4 about 1-1/2 years ago. I rented the first two and ultimately concluded that all take great images and it really just came down to a matter of f/2.8 vs. the flexibility of a zoom. For full-size field soccer, the 300 wasn't enough reach so it was down to the 400 f/2.8 vs. the 200-400 f/4. I ultimately chose the 200-400 because I don't generally shoot at night so I thought I could get by with f/4 and the flexibility of the zoom is awesome for what I shoot. The 400 is also quite a bit larger.

I've never regretted that choice, particularly now that high ISO performance has been improved in the latest round of cameras. And, I've got a lot of shots at 200mm that I just wouldn't have been able to take if I had the 400 on the camera.

So ... enjoy your new lens and let your pictures do your talking.
