In fact they could have ignored the market and concentrated on other
range. Since big guns like canon have this range, should'nt nikon be
compelled into the market?

As I said, I wouldn't count on it. Likewise, I wouldn't count it out. The designers of the exotics don't have anything else to do now that they've redone the entire line up ; ). But I'd think that there would be more market for other designs, such as a 300-600mm f/4 or f/5.6, and Nikon still doesn't have a 300mm f/4 AF-S VR, a 400mm f/5.6 AF-S VR, or a 500mm f/5.6 AF-S VR, all of which would be well received. And there's that pesky 80-400mm that needs redesigning, a missing 70-200mm f/4, and a host of other telephotos that would sell in higher numbers and fill gaps that Canon or others currently fill.
