Generally if I have positional flexibility I take it over being static. The reason has to do with images all coming with similar backgrounds. If you're submitting shoots to a photo editor, they're going to harp on this, as similar backgrounds mean less flexibility in doing multi-photo layouts.

All this goes out the window however when the sun sets and the lights
come on. Then, budget notwithstanding, I would opt for Thom's
suggestion, using the 400 2.8 and the 70-200.

Good point. The thing I shoot most these days--basketball--even an f/2.8 lens doesn't really cut it. I bring the f/1.4s.
