Good points, Fred. Shooting in Manual is a good idea. I was just worried about overwhelming our student. lol

And you are also right about the framing. It obviously can't be ignored. The point to be made, and in hindsight I could have used better wording, is that at f/2.2 or f/1.8, focus is critical and one must make sure the chosen focus point is on the face. (I suggested centre focus for simplicity but any chosen focus point will do as long as it's on the face.)
