Note that I haven't gotten rid of my 200-400mm. But I find it less

day. With a converter, or at long distances (60'+), well, not so
much. One reason why the review is so delayed is that I've had to

thanks for clarifying that it's not sample variation from your perspective!

Moreover, I try to write lens reviews after extensive experience with
them in the field, not just static wall tests, and I don't get into
situations where the 200-400mm is needed as often as I do a 10mm ; ).

It's a good lens. But I don't believe it's the best zoom Nikon has
made, nor do I believe that is the best solution for most shooters.

But if I look around I see tons of what I would consider absolutely stellar images from the 200-400 VR - look at the bird shots by Ray Barlow, for example - a lot of which were shot at over 60 ft distance...
