I can only speak for myself (advanced amateur) but I've been taking significantly better pictures with the D3. Perhaps it's because of the better AF, my incredible new 14-24, more attention and effort with an expensive new toy, etc.

However the FX sensor has a rich, saturated, contrasty look that I dont think I got with my old D50 straight out of the camera. It's subtle but it's there and I'm in love with the look. This is definitely the main advantage for me over any lens perspective/DOF issues.
