D300 Black Point

I've noticed with the D300 that on a high percentage of the photos I shoot as jpegs need the black point set either in NX or Adobe to look really nice. It is the same no matter which of the color modes I use including the DX2 modes.

The photos appear washed out or hazy looking until I set a black point then they are perfect. I've also used Sam Sterns modified neutral picture control which really makes flesh tones natural but the darn light level problem with the black point persists.

Any thoughts or ideas? I never had this problem with the D70 and I suspect it has to do with the way the new metering system is implemented. Is anyone else experiencing this?
