Looking for a small light SLR - D40 or D80?

I'm looking for a Nikon DSLR that is as small and light as possible. My first thought, obviously, is the D40, but I'm not so sure about the limitation of using AF-S lenses only. I know I can mount an AF lens and then use MF (which might or might not be an option) but I prefer the speed and accuracy of AF.

So here's my problem: the smallest lens that would give me AF on the D40 would pretty much be the 18-55mm kit lens, right? Sigma has HSM primes but they're all pretty large, that would get me nowhere. So my question is, how much bigger and heavier would a D80 with a 35mm or 28mm AF lens be?

I can look at the numbers but it is hard for me to see if that gives a substantial difference or not. What I'm hoping is that somebody here has both bodies, preferably with normal or wide-angle prime, and can tell me if that combo is indeed just as "compact" (cough) as the D40 with 18-55mm lens.
