backdrop question

Is Muslin good because its light and portable and reduces flash problems? I was at the local camera store and on display was a wrinkled thin Muslin backdrop. Why would anyone pay money for that thing I wondered?

I sometimes experiment with Fabric at the Fabric store...I am finding anything that is 100 percent cotton can work as a good backdrop, especially if it has designs. I have used other fabrics that have some satin type material in them and they cast highlights and shadows in a very obsure dispersion due to the lighting. Has this been true for anyone else that if they use fabric that is anything other than 100 percent cotton they get flash burns etc?

Yet, I love using cloth with designs etc...much more creative and some are very beautiful, but I think 100 percent cotton is the way to go am I right on this??? Any input would be helpful.

Bethany
