Use of on camera flash to trigger slaves

Ah, the FEL comes to rescue!

I have not thought about that solution. You are right, the * or FEL (flash exposure lock) button emits a preflash. After that if the shutter is pressed within 6 seconds, the onboard flash does not fire a preflash and should be able to trigger optical slaves realiably.
