How to turn dramatic background

"Add a mask to tweak" - how or where to do so? whenever someone mention "add mask", I get frustrated, helpfully your explanation will clear things up.

Thank you so much

I still think my WB has it's moments but what you did here seems to have worked really good. Do you have actions for Lightroom? I am going over some tutorials this weekend and some literture to get better with using it for workflow.

Thanks for the help, Fred

I don't know what program you are using, but in PS, here is a quick tutorial about masking:
http://www.lunacore.com/photoshop/tutorials/tut003.htm

My understanding is PS Elements doesn't have masks, but maybe this will help:

You can see where if you add just the right filter it can give a certain look. I'm sure this photographer found a certain formula and stayed with it.

Thanks for the great shots you did here. It's getting right on track with helping the original poster and his search of this effect, Thanks!

Sorry, no actions for LR...I don't use it.

click ADD LAYER MASK at the bottom of the layers palette. Adjustment layers come with layer masks. Paint mask with a black brush to reveal the layer below. If you Invert the mask to black then paint with a white brush to reveal the new layer.

A quick tut.

Open a color image

Click the round black/white button at bottom of the layers palette and add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer.

Desaturate the image.

Click the mask and paint over the subject with a black brush to reveal the color image below.

2nd part...

Open color image.

Open Hue/Sat. Adjustment layer and desaturate.

Click the mask and Ctrl+I to invert it to black.

Paint over background with white brush to reveal the desaturated layer.

Thank you both so much.
Now I understand, I think it was the concept that got me confused.

Let us see if I got this right: a layer mask will allow us to apply "edits, whatever they are" locally without using selections, in other words, apply an edit to the entire image, then through "mask", perform localized or selective "undo" on particular part of the image.

Once again, thank you.

Alan

That's correct. Masks are what make these programs so powerful.
