Sigma Lenses - Great Value - Bad Warranty Support
Apr 18, 2008
Hello All,
I own several Sigma lenses for use on a variety of camera's I own. Never had a problem with any of them really and they represent an outstanding value for price/ performance ratio. I currently own the 12-24, 18-200, 70-200 & 80-400.
In November 2007, my Sigma 80-400 OS EX began to act funny. When the OS was activated, all pictures taken with the lens were extremely blurry. When the OS was deactivated, the pictures were fine. Even hand holding shots at 400mm with the OS off, were sharper then with the OS on. Obviously the OS mechanism was not working properly and sent it in for repair the last week of November 2007 to Sigma UK.
I still have not gotten that lens back to this date...
After receiving a confirmation letter from Sigma informing me they received my lens, I was told the lens would have to go back to Japan for repair. Sigma UK unfortunately took 2 months to actually send my lens back to Japan though! I believe it finally arrived in Japan sometime in mid January 2008.
I was then told it should be a max 6-8 week repair.
After about two months, in late March, I called Sigma to find out the status of my lens repair. To my surprise, they don't know the status? They know the lens was sent to Japan for repair in mid January, and nothing of the sorts after that. No sort of tracking number or status update, nothing?...
I will add also, it is nearly impossible to get a Sigma UK rep on the phone. Countless times I've tried calling during their office hours, only to have nobody answer and forced to leave messages. Leaving multiple different messages on many different days during the past few months, I've never once received a call back.
I finally got in touch with a rep at Sigma UK this morning to try and get a status on this, and was told again, they don't know when the lens might actually be repaired, but it make take an additional several weeks?!!!
I have to ask myself, what is this garbage Sigma UK is pulling with the repair and warranty services of their lenses?! My lens has now been gone from me for over half a year now, and nobody at Sigma can give me a straight answer as to the status of whats going on or an estimated time of repair.
I'm re-evaluating all my present Sigma lenses and future Sigma lens purchases now, factoring in the reality that if any of those lenses has trouble or break, I will go for several months, if not longer waiting for a repair on them.
I was planning on purchasing both the Sigma 150-500 and 18-125 for my work, and now have been looking at Canon alternatives because of the horrible warranty and repair service Sigma UK is providing.
Has anyone else had similar problems with SIGMA UK when having a lens repaired?
