E-420 ISO 1600 comparison and thoughts

(Apologies for yet another ISO/noise thread. Last one from me for a while, I promise!)

I've tended to be rather negative about the quality of ISO 1600 images under poor lighting on first the E-410/510, and now on the E-420 (though the latter is definitely better). Part of this is clearly technique, but my main complaint is not that those cameras are too noisy per se, but that the character of the noise is much more obnoxious than other cameras I've used, and that where other cameras are tolerant of exposure lapses, the E-420 et al. are not.

To investigate, I compared the E-420 with the Nikon D70, a 4-year old camera with a 6MP Sony sensor. Samples and crops in the following post.
