D3 and high ISO - IF, WHEN and HOW to use

I don't have samples with all 1/3 stop ISO steps, but 450, 640, 1250, 2000, 2500, 4000 and 5000 don't exhibit the signs of being numerically derived from the others. I guess this is so for all other 1/3 stop steps.

This is unlike my Canon 40D, which simulates all 1/3 stop ISOs. (Of course, there are a few other differences as well.)
