Re: 17-55 f/2.8 IS

I've owned the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and 28-75mm f2.8. Both are blistering sharp from end to end. I believe they are comparable to the 17-55mm f2.8 IS and 24-70mm f2.8 L. My 24-70mm f2.8 L is better overall than my Tamron was but the Tamron was sharper.

Will your copy back or front focus? Who knows. People report many FF/BF issues with Canon lenses too.

BTW, the Tokina 12-24 has a very good rep. Canon isn't the only show in town. Tamron, Sigma, Tokina and Zeiss all make fine optics. Like Canon they also make some crappy ones too.

Are the non-Canon lenses really that good? I have a 40D, but was
lead to believe that only Canon lenses will REALLY work with it, so
that's all I've bought. Are the others, like the ones mentioned in
the above post really able to take advantage of what the 40D can
offer? I'm NOT trying to be a troll here, but am genuinely curious,
as there are at least a couple of non-Canon lenses I'd like to try.
